Piazza del forno is a piazza located in the Fondaccio (a place where warehouses and shops were located). To get there, one crosses via Spedale, a name derived from Latin and meaning a place where foreigners stayed. The square has five entrances. There used to be four; instead of the one with the stairs, there was an old house that has fallen into disrepair.
On the left, facing northwest, there once was Pia’s bakery. Sometimes people brought Pia bundles of wood, which she used for the oven, in exchange for bread.
Above the bakery there were rooms to accommodate foreigners. Other rooms were used to dry iris. The iris is a flower cultivated in our area; it was mainly sold in France to make perfume from it.
There was the clog maker’s shop and the knitter’s shop.
