It is the oldest square in Loro Ciuffenna. To the north is the rectory and the church of Santa Maria Assunta. To the east is the oratory where games and parties are held. To the south is the main entrance to the ancient castle, and a building where there once was a school. To the west are the stairs. The old castle was built on a hill surrounded by two streams: the Borro di Tonino and the Torrente Ciuffenna. The castle has changed over time: today all the defence walls are gone; the church was much smaller, facing north; the square was larger and had a tower. Today, the church is large and east-facing.
The castle has belonged to various families including the Conti Guidi; in the square there is still the palace where they lived. It was built with the pietra serena stone found in the quarries of Loro, including that of Gropina. After the castle, the village was formed: the Fondaccio, other squares and buildings.
There are some very old paintings in the church. There are frescoes by Mariotto Cristofano, representing saints. In the altar area there are paintings of the Madonna, Jesus and saints. On the left wall are two panel paintings: L’annunciazione and La pietà by Carlo Portelli, known as Carlo da Loro. At the entrance there is a painting by Venturino Venturi: La Madonna.
