Lisona Square

Italian version

Piazza Lisona is located near the old bridge; there are two entrances: a narrow one to the north and the main one in front of the Ciuffenna. It is so called because it is said that a certain somewhat robust Elisabetta or Lisa lived there and was called Lisona.

The locals called it “piazzetta”.

Now the slabs in the square are of a regular shape taken from the quarry.

Formerly there were those taken from the Ciuffenna, embedded directly in the earth.

Once the square was bigger and lower, then houses were built there.

A long time ago there was a farm. Probably people who came to Loro before entering the village would stop there to shop, to give the animals a drink…. A local resident gave us a tour of part of his grounds, where you can see the old pavement. There is a 7-metre deep well with 4 metres of clean water (a beautiful white scorpion lives there!); the upper part is made of bricks, the lower of rock. Looking at it is a bit scary, but it is really well made and interesting. In one majestic corner was a little hole that opened onto the square. It was used to give food and drink to wayfarers, the poor and the sick; it is now closed, because they have built a staircase in front of it. There used to be a well in the square. Inside the square there is a low, stone building; the blacksmith used to work there, called “magliolo” after the hammer used to work the iron: the “maglio”
