Vittorio Emanuele II Square

Italian version

Piazza Vittorio Emanuele II is located just outside the old castle walls.

In the square there are the Market Lodges, paved with pietra serena stone from the Gropina quarry.

There are marble plaques commemorating people who fell during the two world wars.

There are marble busts of Garibaldi (hero of the Risorgimento) and Vittorio Emanuele II (King of Italy).

Recently, a wooden sculpture by Andre Iron was put up: Pegasus.

Once upon a time, under the lodges there was a market where they sold foodstuffs, such as fruit, vegetables, cheese, chestnut flour, and cloth, clothes and various objects.

Under the lodges children used to play Tappini and Monetine.

In a square there are some buildings, where there once were: a restaurant (trattoria), Cesare’s tailor and Gigi di Baffino’s tailor, Luigia’s shop that made party favours.

At the side of the lodges there used to be a wooden kiosk.

When there was the market, which lasted all day, many people went to the restaurant; when they came out they were happy thanks also to the good wine they had drunk.

Where the road is now, there used to be a small gully that passed through Piazza dello Scoglio and ended up in the Ciuffenna.
